Well, after months of back and forth, I’ve finally gotten definitive word from somebody at Apple – my WiFi application will not be able to be updated. And since there’s a trademark issue with the current name, I’ve had to pull it down from the App Store.
Thanks to everybody who downloaded a copy – over one million copies is pretty darned amazing and was a lot of fun!

very sorry that WiFinder is gone from the App Store. It was very usefull…and free!
Thanks

I had to clear my iPod touch and the Wi-Fi program went with it. I’m very disappointed that I lost it. It was a great application.
Is there any chance that there will be another version coming out?

Apple is a bunch of sucks…
They should allow you to change the name and release the updated version…
Apple Sucks… All join together and never buy another app from the appstore until apple lets the renamed WiFinder to be released!!!!!

Oh also… how about going 3rd party and releasing a package to the 3rd party Jailbroken Phone sites?
February 6, 2009 at 8:13 pm |
Thanks for the support! But hey, they’re within their rights to do as they please – it’s not like Microsoft platforms, where there was legal action taken against having “internal” and “external” APIs
And I’m unfortunately avoiding jailbroken applications, as that’s against the developer terms of service I had to agree to.
Sadly, any update or re-release will just have to wait until Apple provides a public API for WiFi access. Sorry!

Hi Lars,
This is disappointing, although understandable given the nature of Apple..
What is more disappointing is that some of us paid for this application and it is no longer available. Unfortunately on my iphone I need to reinstall apps periodically when they no longer work.
Is there any recourse?
I’m not sure how many of the 1 million downloaders paid the 79c, but as a customer I do feel a little let down.

Unfortunately, there’s no recourse. I’m very sorry I wasn’t able to better support all of the folks who had it – both paid and free! As you can guess, it was a very frustrating experience.

I’ve only just realised it had been pulled, but I have it working on my iPhone and love it, it is clearly better than any other app. of it’s kind.
I wonder if 3.0 will break it?
April 27, 2009 at 12:42 pm |
Yes. All WiFi applications will be broken in 3.0. I’m assuming the newer applications have been told they won’t be allowed to update either, though it’s not like we get together for drinks

This sucks, My brother just purchased a Iphone and I still have mine running with this app. Its a cool little app, so I went looking for it for him only to discover its been removed. What a bummer to find Apple has pulled it, Apple sucks!
3.0 will see the end of Wifinder I guess
June 18, 2009 at 8:25 am |
Wifinder actually broke with 3.0
Pity, I used it quite often and it was pretty handy.
Lars, I take it some of the private APIs you used have been removed – any idea if there’s a way around that to get it to work again? If so, would you be interested in releasing the source so at least other devs can still get some benefit from all your work? (There could be issues mind, like say if somebody else added it to cydia or whatever..)

I was Sad to find WiFinder crashes on OS 3.0.
I would certainly be one of the 1st to install it if it were available in Cydia.
That & Qik would be the 1st Apps installed after a “restore”.

WiFinder was my most loved third party app.
It makes searching for networks as good as the iPhone ought to be on it’s own. Really hope there is a way to bring it back/update in the future. Keep trying!

Great App! free! I’m sure Apple will change their position on a near future.
June 20, 2009 at 1:31 am |
Sorry to hear about that – really loved your app!
Thanx for making it available until now..

I too find it sad we can’t use it with 3.0.. Like Sid, it was my favorite and most useful app on my iTouch. I hope it come back some day.
Thank you for a great free app!! For the time it lasted!

The WiFinder app from the app store is a great app, but since it used private APIs, it got pulled. It was free so I think it would be a good idea to let people get the IPA. The link is at Appscene.org and will let you download the IPA for WiFinder. Add it to your iTunes library and then sync it. Happy WiFinding….

Lars have sent you a comment that the Wifi-finder doesn’t work currently on my OS 3.0 system then got around to reading this blog and all became clear. I would like to echo the views expressed by others that this was a very useful application. Can I assume the renamed WifiChecker also does not work?
Cheers
Anyway if there is nothing new to report I’d just like to say thanks for the free app whilst it worked

im confused i still see wifi checker, formerly wifinder, on the app store. further it says that it works on os 2.2 or later (which isnt real true at the moment, right?) and it also is under review for a new update for 3.0 (are you saying now that they have denied the review?) are you going to change the description in the store to reflect recent changes? sorry to see it go. thx

Wow, Bjorn wasn’t kidding when he said you are incredibly smart, Congratulations on all of your success now and all to come.

Is it possible to upload the new ipa here and then paste the update over the one in iTunes???
August 5, 2009 at 12:42 am |
Unfortunately, Apple has fairly strict rules in their developer agreement – no developing for cracked platforms. Sorry!

This app was one of the most important I had on my iPhone. It helped in getting online when my 3G subscription went dead. It was able to connect to different wifi networks when the Apple wifi connect utility wouldn’t even pick them up. Showing the different strength values was extremely useful.
I find it very interesting that there are paid apps available on this date, one day after 3.1 is released, which claim to do the same thing, but are detracted in their comments as being not as useful as this app, but still Lars cannot get his free app approved by the app-czar.
