So it turns out that Apple, in the 3.0 version of the OS, moved the WiFi APIs from a private framework location into a more public space. I have an update that is sitting in the queue to try and provide a new – and still free! – version of WiFi Checker, along with some changes that have been sitting on my machine since August of last year or so… not the least of which is a very spiffy icon
Here’s hoping they aren’t just leading me along! After all, they did let at least one other WiFi application update for 3.0…

Was a little confused finding this again in the Store… and the name changed from WiFinder to Wifi Checker… Can’t wait for that, because I think it’s essential to my iPod touch
Thanks Mauko

I sincerely hope that this is published, and hopefully soon.
I always use this when I am away, as it finds more networks than default.
I was shocked when I couldn’t use it with OS3.0, and with a trip in a few short weeks I am hoping that this will be ready prior to my departure.

amazing! i can’t tell you how excited i am for your release! your wifi app was easily the best and the most useful third party app available and i can’t wait to get my hands on it again

…my trip starts in a week… Apple seems to be very slow…

I really need the update. Since installing 3.0 on my iPhone 3G, WiFinder will not run. I click the icon, it pauses a few seconds, then just returns to the page with all my other icons. I love the app!

Just downloaded the new version but still does not run on my updated 3g. Hope you can get it working because its a great app. Thanks.

Guys, Wifitrak said it would update and took about 5 days for the update to come through.
Hopefully Wifi Checker will take the same amount, or possibly less, seeing as the stream of OS3.0 compatible apps is thinning.

I hope Apple let’s this happen, I consider my iPod Touch fairly useless to me without Lars’s application. Why does the built in wifi detector have to suck so badly?
June 29, 2009 at 10:04 am |
Talking to the Developers of WiFiTrak, it took almost three weeks for Apple, because they have sent the update 10 days prior to OS 3.0 release… It’s working now and so will WiFi Checker… soon…

Had to run up to a site today to do a quick check for wireless coverage… I decided to be clever and just bring my iPod Touch with WiFinder on it instead of lugging a laptop….
Ack… That’s how I found out that WiFinder got broken by 3.0…. Hope the update is out soon this is a really handy little app…

Are you still using apple80211? I hope they let you use it. I’m also working on an app that depends on apple80211.

Your app is very useful. Thank you very much for making the app free.
I hope the compatible 3.0 version will be released soon.
Cheers!

Cannot wait your update will be released ! I miss Wifinder on my iPhone v3.0…
@Apple : Please speed up, the release of the best app ;o)

How about releasing this app via Cydia? Wifi Finder is very useful; I’ve been missing it ever since upgrading to 3.0, and Apple doesn’t seem to care about it. How long has it been under review for now?
July 20, 2009 at 3:02 am |
I used to use this app, i was great but…
This mysterious “updated submitted for 3.0 compatibility” update, has been so long in coming, I’m starting to wonder if this is really an app store problem and not a code problem. Surely it doesn’t take this many weeks
to get an update through ?
July 20, 2009 at 12:38 pm |
I’m just a lucky guy! This is about par for my updates back when they were letting me update WiFinder – about a month each.
July 23, 2009 at 8:01 am |
no news ??? apple sucks ass at this process the best applications in the store and the let you wait so much time ….ofc the rest of 90% of useless applications get on market right away…. pls post some news
July 24, 2009 at 5:16 pm |
Although I think that this app does not duplicate the functionality of the Settings app because it shows all networks in range of the antenna, even if you can’t connect, making sniffing out hotspots in airports easier.
July 25, 2009 at 3:22 am |
I bought Wifinder and later updated to 3.0 on my touch, which then broke Wifinder. The subsequent wifinder update worked and just recently it doesn’t work again. Am I alone with this?
July 28, 2009 at 3:17 am |
I’m SOOO READY for Apple to release this update! Man, I miss this app!!!
Thanks for writing an app that actually WORKS and is USEFUL!
Now, if Apple would just get on the ball!

I too have upgraded to the iPhone 3Gs and my Wifinder is broke….

Here is what Apple has to say about this:
Hello and thank you for writing in today. I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to offer my assistance today. My name is JR and I will be delighted to help you. Please allow me to investigate your concern.
It appears the Developer is working on integrating more enhanced graphics at this time and that appears to be the reason for the delay. I can reassure you that the iTunes Store will keep you posted. I would encourage you to contact the developer to ask any questions you may have.
Thank you, since there is not an update available for the application, the application’s developer may be able to give you an estimated date for when they intend to complete a version compatible with iPhone 3.0. Here is their contact information:
Lars Bergstrom

You are a valued customer and I want you to know that I am committed to resolving the issue with you. It was a pleasure assisting you today Doug. Thank you for being such a valued iTunes Store Customer. Have a wonderful day.
Sincerely,
JR

????? info info info

Lars–
From what Doug said above (7/30) they’re waiting for something from you. They may be confused, but….
We wouldn’t all care except that you have one of the best apps out there.
August 5, 2009 at 12:07 pm |
Nah, unfortunately, they have everything from me. I’m just waiting for them to approve the v3.0 compatible version. It’s been “in review” for the last month or so now.
August 5, 2009 at 12:24 pm |
is there any way you can ask them about the answer that they gave to doug?
August 10, 2009 at 6:13 am |
is it possible they have lost your update? Can you send through another update to update the update?
August 10, 2009 at 8:03 am |
this is why cydia rules! if the program is finished why is taking so much to verify it
August 12, 2009 at 9:50 am |
Hope for this update is quickly fading into the same black hole the supposed update has gone. More info would help, maybe some correspondence that refutes Doug’s?
August 29, 2009 at 5:15 pm |
This is insane. Where did the most useful App go?
September 5, 2009 at 3:55 am |
This looks like a very useful application – I’ve paid money for applications that promise less!
I do hope you resolve whatever problems you are having with the app and 3.0, and even if you have to tack a small fee on it I suspect that it will still be very popular (0.99 for example)…
Thanks!
September 18, 2009 at 2:39 pm |
Looks like they pulled wifinder completely…Its not even listed anymore! It was a great app!
September 18, 2009 at 8:06 pm |
Those Apple bastards…
September 18, 2009 at 5:39 pm |
Any news on this? Like others, I’ve noticed the old app has been completely removed….
